This is a really great idea I got from a client. Instead of not allowing duplicated contacts or else, when creating a contact, if it's duplicated, instead of not allowing the contact to be created, the merge contacts modal should pop up to update the contact details right away and even to access it directly.

Pretty nice for smooth operations with contacts or duplicates!
