Stop invoice numbers from disappearing & getting lost

When we start filling out an invoice, but we go back without saving it, then we start a new invoice, the previous invoice number will be lost from the system. It just disappears, as if the invoice was deleted.
This causes compliance issues, as we need to submit all our tax invoices to the government and if they find any invoice missing, we'll be heavily fined.
Example: I click on "new invoice", a blank invoice with number inv_001 appears. I got back without saving, then click on "new" again. Another blank invoice appears but this time with number inv_002. If I look/search for invoice inv_001, it's not there.
It's simple: we just need to be able to view & download all such invoices even if they're blank.
I hope the team can find a solution. Maybe simply auto-save an invoice as soon as the user creates one, that seems like the easiest and most obvious way. Even if the invoice is blank and draft, at least it isn't lost.
